“Wherever I walk, I come upon familiar objects in an unfamiliar world; everything is just as I imagined it, yet everything is new. It is the same with my observations and ideas.
I have not had a single idea which was entirely new or surprising, but my old ideas have become so much more firm, vital, coherent that they could be called new.” - J.W.Goethe |
7 curators and a 8 week journey along the Danube. This is about 56 days of infinite chances to understand the complexity of the contemporary art scene between two cities, Vienna and Budapest. The encounters of the writers of this blog took place during the residency programme Curators Connection, which constitute the exciting framework of this entire narration. As many writers have said before, the essence of a trip consists itself in the continuous practice of the vision as a way to experience new realities, always filtered by our personal lenses. One could say that is like trying to cross the distance between our starting point and our destination in terms of awareness. The purpose of this blog is to document these encounters. In this globalized era - when cultural diversity fades as do the restraints of distance - we the curators of this blog focus our attention to the realities of local art scenes as a way to reconsider our own approach to political, social and cultural contexts from an often critical point of view.
Each one curator has a different story, from Canada to the U.S. through Europe (Rome, Paris, London) down to Singapore, and the comparison and confluence of all these experiences create the perfect precondition for a new affected insight into the contemporary art scene. With this purpose, 7x8 was born as a collection of impressions at first sight, as well as a space for deep questions and passionate analysis of a specific context discovered day-by-day, meeting after meeting, museum after museum, and interrogated by seven different voices. We report experiences, raise questions, confront opinions and collect memories in order to share what we found and what we missed in the art scene of these cities. |

As the 8 weeks came to a close, we realised that our journey together is far from over. After parting ways: we detoured through Europe, North America, the Middle East, and Asia; we relocated; and we returned home. Now situated in our respective cities we continue to investigate our surrounding art scenes, including local institutions, exhibitions, and artists. As we immerse ourselves in our own communities, we do so with the knowledge that our curatorial practices are not restricted by borders but rather characterised by our travels between borders. Now in its second year as a multi-national collective, 7x8’s curatorial practice is not restricted by borders but rather characterized by the travels between them.
